Being fully operational as standalone hardware hacked noise machines, they can also be used as parts of a modular chain, as alternative external modules.
I am quite proud to consider my stall at the Backyard Market in Brick Lane, London, as the first physical shop of circuit bent music instruments. "Stamou Instruments" has already had a successful four-month residency as an official trading brand at the Backyard Market which is one of the most well-known and busy handcraft markets in the center of London. Many thanks to people who visited my stall so far and bought some music equipment from my short-run series or some of my one-off pieces. It has been a very useful experience and also very pleasant meeting other independent makers and sellers of their own goods.
Since I started circuit bending back in 2005 I always avoided messing around with keyboards and drum machines, as I considered them ‘too musical’ for the standards of the sounds I was creating at that time. Recently I started modifying some very interesting electronic music instruments and I found it fascinating. There are endless possibilities of sound synthesis with some of these machines, plus they could function both for exploratory and for more commercal music. Here are some videos & pics of some of my recent experimentations….
Hosted at the Music Hackspace, London, I organized this series as an introduction and secrets sharing meetings about the art of circuit bending and electronic instruments design. Many enthusiast hackers and devoted sound explorers joined the team during the monthly workshop series, lots of new inspiring instrument designs were created and new sounds came out of old toys!!! I would like to thank all the participants and I am looking forward for another exciting year of circuind bending and extended handmade electronics techniques. Special thanks to Martin from "Rebel Technology" and to Sus for her kind assistance!

Soothing machines (or alternatively "sound spa" devices) are pretty much fun to mess around with their circuits since they display interesting samples of nature's sounds in 8bit resolution. I have transformed this relaxation tool to an instrument capable of producing complicated patterns with the use of a voltage controls from a modular synthesizer (tested in eurorack format).
I am usually not making self-generated aleatoric sound devices (instruments which produce endless autonomous random patterns). But this is not the case...this toy-laptop didn't seem to have so much potential for modifying, but after a few short circuity attempts this is what it turned out to be like...
I already used it in a few gigs and it seems that I am going to be carrying it around for as long as it lasts before it eventually crashes. There is a variety of harsh noises and glitches by different combinations of patching the mini-banana cables.
“You see, I am inventing a new language. When an umbrella breaks and you get wet, is it still an umbrella? It has changed, but the word is the same. It is imprecise, false. I invent new words that will correspond to the things”. This particular fragment from Paul Auster’s novel “City of Glass” has become one of my main inspirations concerning the current project. During the past few years of my sonic experimentations I have often utilized “ready-mades” and "found" materials as means to explore their potential aural and visual sense. Familiar everyday objects have been used as points of departure towards the creation of original sound sources; parts of mechanical toys, electrical motors and fans, old record players, broken alarms and pieces of everyday domestic equipment as well as other dispatched sound electronics were modified and transformed into automaton sound sculptures. The general purpose of these -often ephemeral- assembled devices is to generate constant synchronized or random acoustic patterns and to interact with each other as parts of a wider sound installation setup engaging with and transforming the environment where they are installed.

These videos feature the first complete series of automaton sound sculptures made out of recycled material and found objects. The devices are based on mechanical movements and intend to be used for the creation of musical structures in live performance. Please keep updated to watch some more videos, including series of hacked electronics and series of modified turntables/cassette tape players and more to come...
A two-day Workshop of circuit bending and designing original sound devices out of electronic toys. Hosted at Sound//Space, a temporary DIY-labels record shop and a venue for 'in situ' sound-art performances based at V22, London.
Many thanks to the seven participants (my lucky number) for their enthusiasm. Eventually a few new sound machines were brought to life in the end of the workshop and hopefully they might be used for some of their own sound projects.
The Stylophone is a vintage tiny farfisa-like mini keyboard from the '60s (pretty well-known since David Bowie used it at his "Space Oddity" recording) and revived a few years ago with a digital circuity plus some extras (3 extra sound modes, audio input). My version has turned that toy it into a fully functional modular VCO capable to be driven by other oscillators or LFOs since it's got a CV input. Of course there is a pitch shifting knob, it also has two "hands-free" sustain switches (a high and a low octave note). A fancy and stylish alternative or extension to the Korg Monotron.
“Computerized Arcade” is a vintage sound & light toy from the ‘80s made by Radio Shack (my favorite toys and electronics manufacturer). This prehistoric Monome-type device has got some huge color buttons and one of the simple games featured in the box is a wonderful step sequence capable of composing your own melody riffs.

My first video-bending console. Originally a simple compact video processor , it has turned into a very flexible and useful video glitch-effects processor easily controlled by modular synthesizer Gate and Trigger signals. Fade, Gain & Color as well a a "crash button" can be driven by Trigger inputs.
The following video demonstrates the "VHSynth" system in action (the original sound is also live processed). More info about the "VHSynth" here.

This is a prototype of a semi-random pattern sequence generator, all controllable via cv inputs(from a modular synthesizer or other electronic device with cv outputs) and gain knobs . I call it "the Unilab", due to the brand of the found box that I used as an enclosure. Small but extremely powerful in creating layers of adjustable pulsing arpeggios and textures, this device is capable of producing a huge variety of sounds, ranging from industrial/ambient atmospheres to melodic chiptune (Commodore-like or GameBoy-like) and kraut rock sequences. A nasty little monster!!!!
Originally a sound toy in the shape of Noah's Ark bought in a flea market for 50cents, the circuit displayed animal sounds and melodies. It has been re-boxed in a VHS case and bent so as to trigger its internal sounds by mini-jack connectors. There is an additional pitch control and CV input. It has been especially constructed to integrate with modular synths. The following video demonstrates the synchronization of "Ark-ade" with an analogue synthesizer/sequencer.
This device is as simple as divine...it's a casstete-tape walkman transformed into a creative electroacoustic instrument. In other words it's a kind of a primitive sampler, as well as a tone generator and a drone machine. But first of all it's nothing more than a dictaphone with a simple pitch mod, a creative solo instrument for live gigs, also an instant lo-fi sampling producer's tool. Just take a look at this noisy video (there will be further presentations) and you will find out few of this simple device's abilities...
Gameboy was my teenage obsession; especially TETRIS. Twenty years later I used a pitch-bending kit from GETLOFI to create this sound device that incorporates great with GB LSDJ cartridges. This video sample is performed with the "shitwave" rom.
I started circuit bending a few years ago as an attempt to discover new sounds into old circuits. Nowadays I design and make electronic and mechanical musical equipment for personal use and for other musicians.
This is my latest project, still in progress. It's about to become a sound source for use with a modular synthesizer. It especially incorporates with the "Plague Bearer" module by "Flight of Harmony".
